First off I want to thank everyone who helped make 2011 a great year for Sew Dandee! Your support and kind words mean so much to me and without you there would be no Sew Dandee. It wasn't a great year for retail overall but what a wonderful, much needed surprise it was to end up having the BEST DECEMBER EVER for Sew Dandee! You guys are the awesomest and I love each and every one of you! Let's continue to keep this handmade revolution going into 2012 and keep our local businesses alive!

Lucky me, I get to skip town for a few days come this Friday! My honey and I are off to Vancouver for a holiday with my Mom and we can't wait! We'll be open here at the store as usual over the weekend but I have to close up the shop on Monday and Tuesday. I'll be back at the store come Wednesday January 11th working on more aprons, silk screened dish towels and a bunch of new projects!

I'm also waiting on more of the Dark Cycle shirts to come in since they were such a huge hit. This time around I got more of the grizzly bear, buck and a new design that I hope you'll love as much as I do!

Next weekend, October 22nd and 23rd is the Green Lifestyle & Organic Living Show at the Convention Centre and I highly recommend checking it out! Mac and I went last year and it was really great, not to mention educational. This year is sure to be even better. And once again, Sew Dandee will be representing in the fashion shows that will take place twice each day along with some other eco friendly fashions.

Learn all about greener modes of transportation with the bike, scooter and car show, check out the Kid Zone and the Food Zone, take part in the 10 for 10 yoga and fitness pass and much more! See you guy there!

I just got in a bunch of new, brightly colored organic cotton onesies from B.C. and have been busy silk screening and heat pressing them up!

I'd love some feedback on these silk screened wall hangings! They're made using super heavy weight card stock with a rikrak trim for hanging. They look like a little house when they're hung up, too!

I was delighted to get an email from Cynara Geissler, marketing manager at Arsenal Pulp Press in Vancouver, BC asking me to run a giveaway on my blog! Turns out Vancouver author Leanne Prain is going to be in Winnipeg this Sunday, Oct 2 to promote her new book Hoopla: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery. You might already know her from her other super awesomely inspirational book, Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Grafitti.

The event will be at McNally Robinson at 2pm this Sunday October 2nd and will also feature Winnipeg's own fibre artist (and book contributor) Takashi Iwasaki. After the book signing you can stick around for the stitch and bitch with them, too!

It's time to cozy up at Sew Dandee!

I know that the calendar says it's officially fall, but you'd hardly know it by the forecast for the next week! But us Winnipeggers know, fall (and sadly, winter) is still going to make an appearance. And I'm here to let you know you don't have to be cold for one minute of it!

I discovered yet another talented knitter in our fair city, the lovely Rosemary Shamess. She uses the most beautiful wools and alpaca to make her unique mitts, hats, scarves, head/neck bands, slipper sox and more. The technique she uses is called 'thrumming'.

Below is a letter I just got from the lovely and talented Miss Melanie Wesley, the seamstress/designer/teacher I've been raving about. She's got a schedule set up for the fall/winter season featuring some great sewing projects! I'm pretty pumped to be taking the 'Skirt Drafting Mega Course'.

First things first. A new name...Melanie Wesley Sewing Studio is now The Stitchery, short, sweet and to the point (not unlike yours truly). New hours...we are no longer open to the public on Monday. We are open Wed.Fri.& Sat. from noon till six and starting in October we will add Thursday to the line up. Before we get to the "calender" I want to let you know about an exciting project I have planned for the spring...Me Made March. Some of you watched as I participated in this online challenge last march. Well, I had sew much fun I want to do it again...but I want you to join me! You have 5 months to prepare...take some workshops, come for some private lessons or stop by the studio for moral support and inspiration. On with the calender.

OCTOBER 2011

Join us October 1st as we celebrate Culture Days with Wolseley Wool...We are hosting an Open House together so join us for coffee and treats from 10 am till 6 p.m.

"Kids Beginner Class" - (Tuesday October 4,11,18 & 25, from 7-9p.m) - In this 4 week intro to sewing for kids your child will learn the basics of using a sewing machine, cutting and marking skills as well as following a pattern to make a simple project. We will also spend some time talking about safety in the sewing room. The instructor is Alesha Frederickson and the cost is $120.

"Skirt Drafting Mega Course" -(Wednesday October 5- December 7 from 7-9 p.m ) - In the first half of this 10 week course you will learn how to measure for and draft a custom sloper which you will then use to create a custom fitted muslin. In the second half of the course you will learn about using your sloper to design and draft an endless variety of skirt options.We will also cover waistbands, zippers, pockets and hems...this is a serious amount of information here.Don't worry if you don't know the lingo...you will know all by the end of this course.The instructors are Melanie Wesley & Alesha Frederickson and the cost is $250.

"Paper bag Princess" mini workshop-( October 8 from 7-9 p.m) - In this one day workshop you will learn to measure and cut your fabric to create a simple, elastic waist skirt. The instructor is Alesha Frederickson and the cost is $30.

"Circle Skirt" - workshop (October 13 & 20 from 1 -3 p.m) - In this 2 day workshop you will learn to draft and sew a basic full circle skirt with waistband and zipper. Some prior sewing experience is required. The instructors are Melanie Wesley & Alesha Frederickson and the cost is $60.

Private Lessons are booked on Mondays & Tuesdays depending on the availability of instructors..

So, my latest project is taking vintage half aprons and adding a dish towel panel to the top, silk screened with one of my clever images, thus making it a full super cool apron! Check out the first two I've made up!

I've got 8 more ready to put together and they should all be on the racks by the end of this week!

I also got a lovely package from Barb of Spiro Creations out in New Zealand yesterday. She sent us some new leather medicine bags and some great new fringe purses in the most beautiful colors. Come check them out!

Wow, is this ever a week for new goodies at Sew Dandee! I don't even know where to begin!

Ok, well last night I found some time to silk screen some new towels with the West Broadway image on it so we're stocked up on those along with the Wolseley and Osborne Village images on towels AND men's and women's shirts.

I also screened a bunch more kid's Manitoba pride shirts. And that reminds me! Roy of Dumb Chauffeur brought in more men's Winnipeg Beach, Grand Beach and Confusion Corner shirts along with some kid's shirts, too!

Hmmmm what else?? Oh, the Dani Press cards finally made it from Vancouver and they're wonderful! A perfectly sweet balance to my sour cards, I think. She's got some for birthday, weddings, bon voyage and some no-particular-reason cards that I really adore. Come check them out!

And just in time for this hot, sunny summer weather we're having I got in a whole schwack of new sunglasses!

They're all $12 a pair or buy two pair for $20! Come load up!

Oh, and I had customer come in this week looking for a cool fanny pack so I whipped one up for her and cut out another for the store. It's been a while since I've made any new ones so stay tuned for more with some of the fun fabrics I've been working with lately! Here it is! The ULTIMATE Winnipeg pride shirt! I hope to have a bunch more men's and women's shirts screened up tonight in time for you Folk Festers (and non-Folk Festers) who are coming into the city to hit up your favorite Winnipeg spots. Such as Sew Dandee! ;)

I've also got some fantastic new silk screened shirts from a couple in Florida. The line is called Dark Cycle Clothing and they specialize in putting random animals on bikes! I've got dinosaurs, wolves and foxes in both guy's and girl's tops so come on down and check them out!

More Winnipeg Pride just in time for Canada Day!

Well, I finally got around to designing some new screens and I hope you like them! I only had time to screen a few women's ones but I'll be making more for men soon as well as putting these new screens on towels. As per usual, you can get any of these neighborhoods on a shirt you bring in to me.

I've also got a new, bigger Riel Deal screen along with the ULTIMATE Manitoba Pride screen coming soon! Stay tuned!

In the mean time, make sure you make your way down to the Village on Friday for the Annual Canada Day Street Festival! It even looks like the weather might be perfect! (Fingers crossed) We're open from 11am to 9pm Friday and we'll be running our HUGE sale all day long! Come by and say hi and grab some sweet handmade awesomeness!

And for the first time, from what I hear, the vendors by Confusion Corner will be a lot of local designers and crafters! FINALLY! So make sure to walk the full length of the festival and take it all in! Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, an umbrella and your reusable bags and you'll be sure to have a fantastic Canada Day!

Long time no post!

It's been waaaay too long since my last post but I've got a good excuse! I was lucky enough to get away to Victoria, BC for the long weekend with my honey so that kept me away from all virtual communication for a good six days. A very nice break, let me tell ya! I found some awesome shop owners who share my love of handmade and vintage along with some fantastic new duds to add to my already bursting wardrobe. But enough of my bragging.... let's get down to business!

This past Saturday I was selling at the spring installment of The Crafty Minions Handmade and Vintage Sale at Aqua Books and it was another great day with great people. I got to catch up with some of my consignors and loaded up on some fresh stock from Head in the Oven aprons and Marathon 1981's kookie monsters.

And I made a couple new connections with some other local designers and crafters who I might start carrying, too so stay tuned for some new goodies on the shelves at Sew Dandee!

I've also been busy coming up with some new designs inspired by a customer's request for a fabric lunch bag. Here's what I've come up with so far and I've got more fabrics and sizes cut out that I plan to put together this week. As per usual, I can make a custom lunch bag for you if you like! You can even choose from my pile of super fun fabrics for your pocket/panel on the front! Lunch has never been so fun!

I found some inspiration while in Victoria and made up some elastic belts with fun vinyl scrap 'buckles'. You just pull them on and TAH DAH, you've got an adorable accessory that gives you a waistline!

Oh and I almost forgot! I found a new line of shirts from Thread Pit that are good for a giggle. And you know how I love a good giggle. ;)

And one more thing! For the month of June I'll be having a draw to win one of the handmade creations from here at Sew Dandee! As some of you may already know, Facebook has decided (yet again) to make some changes to the Group pages. So, I've had to make up a new page for Sew Dandee. If you would be so kind, I'd love for you to 'like' the new Sew Dandee page! But only if you really, truly DO like Sew Dandee. ;)

I can't remember a time when my shop has been more packed with AWESOMENESS!

I've got so much great stuff on the racks right now from retro inspired skirts to unique silk screened shirts to d.i.y. doll kits and one of a kind feather earrings and aprons. And that's just the tip of the iceburg! If you haven't been down to the shop in a while, now is the time.

Just yesterday, the lovely and talented local designer, Melanie Wesley brought in her latest creations for Sew Dandee. The prettiest spring skirts in the coolest, vintage fabrics!

We got a big batch of new silk screened t-shirts from Montreal couple, Jezebel and they're AWESOME! All the ones in these shots are women's but all the images shown also came in men's sizes.

And that lovely skirt they're shown with is by local seamstress, Grace Sheldon.

She also sent a few kid's t-shirts in the bunch that are just down right adorable! Perfect for your little mouse!

And in addition to our onesies, bibs, legwarmers, hats and t-shirts we've also got some new baby headbands made by local crafter, Leslie Pinchin!

So, get your butts on down here and pat yourself on the back for plowing thru those nasty exams! You deserve it!

Sew Dandee is thrilled to announce that we now carry your favourite (or soon to be new favourite) locally made body products by Just The Goods!

Milena puts her heart and soul into each batch of shaving solids, facial toner and moisturizer, body and foot butter, lip balm and hand lotion.

Here's a snippit from her blog that touches on the motivation behind her starting Just The Goods:
Just the Goods seeks to offer affordable vegan products to help them become more widely available, therefore facilitating healthier living as part of increased consciousness about the environment and consumerism in general. The only Just the Goods product not yet vegan is our lip balm, which contains beeswax and lanolin. Both items are harvested without causing harm and I am working toward confirming our cruelty-free approach with PETA’s Conscious Consumer program.

I've been using her body butter, lip balm and facial moisturizer for a few months now and I'm hooked. Not only can you feel good about using her products knowing that they're all cruelty-free and made locally with only the most natural ingredients and minimal packaging, her products are awesome and feel amazing on your skin. Not to mention, they all smell naturally amazing!

Even MORE new stuff came in today! It's like Christmas for me over here!

I got in some new Jduct duct tape wallets that continue to knock my sox off with her detailed work using ALL duct tape!

Check out these newer ones that I got in in addition to the best sellers like sushi, turntable, cassette and octopus.

And I got a bitter sweet box of Mystery Girl dresses today, too. Sweet because they're always such fantastic designs in great prints. Bitter because she is no longer working with knit fabrics so these designs will be the last of hers that I'll be carrying at Sew Dandee. She's trying out some new designs using more expensive, fancy fabrics and making more tailored items. I may or may not be trying some out here in the store. I'll keep you posted though!

I was also a busy bee silk screening neckties last night so we've got TONS to choose from now! Here's a smattering of what I've got on the racks.

Of course I've also got the Riel Slurpee image, skulls, geek chic, not as square as I look and some other Manitoba pride ones, too.

Monday was a great day for new stuff at Sew Dandee!

Local girl, Christina of Anything But Ordinary Aprons brought in some of her super adorable server aprons.

She uses the cutest fabrics and adds pretty lace detail so you can feel extra fancy while at work.

Or you can wear them over a tunic or dress just for fun! They're that versatile! Come down and check them out!

Then the lovely and talented Wanda June brought in her newest design working with organic bamboo. Let me tell you, this new hooded tank dress is not only a great design for all body types but it also feels like buttah! Wanda's on fire these days with inspiration so make sure to stay tuned for even more new spring designs with this eco-friendly, luxurious fabric!

And as you can see, it's another great design of hers that works perfectly with my new tie cumber belts!

So, despite the ass weather, turn-out was pretty good at The Crafty Minions Sale at Aqua Books on Saturday! It was such an amazing collection of unique handmade goodies alongside the coolest in vintage and retro finds from clothing to kitchen ware to bird cages! I found the coolest pair of knee high hand knit vintage sox for FOUR DOLLARS!! A steal of a deal. Not to mention a full set of vintage glasses and a set of Pyrex bowls that I'm having a love affair with already. Kami of Marathon 1981 took some great shots of the sale. Check out her blog for some visuals of our day!

I'm sure that Aqua Books is now going to be the new venue for craft and vintage sales for the folks looking for all things awesome and unique. Kelly Hughes has a great thing going over there. If you haven't been to an event there yet, GO! He's got something going on every day plus it's a fantastic bookstore AAAAAND you gotta eat at Eat!, their little bistro in the back of the bookstore. It's a destination for a day out with Mom or your honey or the girls or just a day for yourself!

The next Crafty Minions Sale is May 28th so don't miss it! I'm also taking part in the Artisan's Market put on by The Mantioba Craft Museum and Library at the West End Cultural Centre. It's on Saturday April 9th and Sunday April 10th from 10am to 4pm. Come support handmade!

Second date for monster workshop!

I've decided to add a second date in February for our Make Your Own Monster Workshop! In addition to the February 8th one next week, there is also one on Wednesday February 23rd from 6pm to 8pm. Be sure to register at Sew Dandee at least a day in advance of the workshop you want to attend. And you're more than welcome to come to both and get started on making a monster family!

I'm BURSTING with creativity and new ideas in 2011, it would seem! I just started making my own sew-on buttons and I'm SO pumped to get all those adorable fabrics in so I can make even more. And if you need custom fabric covered buttons for a project you're working on, bring the fabric and I'll make some up for you. I also bought some fantastic charms that I'm incorporating into my newest design, the necklace headband.

Here are a few more I made today along with some sterling silver hook bike earrings!

I've also been working on some new switch plates too! Most of these are headed off to the Tara Davis Studio Boutique in Nelson, BC but if you see one you like and MUST have, just get in touch with me or come see me at Sew Dandee and I'll make one up for you.

I've developed a new addiction to cute little charms and have decided to try my hand at making some of these necklace/headbands! I use scraps of stretchy knit fabric and braid strips together. Then I add on one or a series of adorable charms and VOILA! And since it's a stretchy fabric you can wear it as a necklace or as a headband with the sweet charms hanging every so cutely! Let me know what you think! I'm still tweaking the idea so keep an eye out for other versions and variations.

We've got tons of great gifts here for everyone on your list and for all budgets. Find a cool gift for as little as $2 for a cool pin or magnet. Save yourself the torture of going to the malls (I HATE that M word!) and support local business and handmade! It'll give you an extra dose of warm and fuzzy feelings, I promise!

Well, the first installment of This Ain't Your Grandma's Craft sale last Friday at the WECC was a success! Great traffic, great people and great times! And now it's time to gear up for the second sale at the Park Theatre this coming Sunday, December 5th from 6pm to 10pm. I've been working on some new hooded cowls to bring to the sale this Sunday. Here are just a few samples of my latest design.

I'll be sure to have tons of towels, cards, switch plates, pins, magnets and much more at the sale this weekend so come load up!

She'll be bringing by some of her latest winter hats soon so come by and check them out!

One of Sew Dandee's longest consignors, Pego, brought in some new wallets today and as usual, they're amazing. Laura has found time in her busy life living up north to silk screen some new patterns and images for her handmade wallets. Check out the polar bear and inukshuk!

And I've saved the cutest for last! Check out these upcycled sox turned baby legwarmers made by local designer, Jolene of Hug a Leg! SO CUTE!

Ok, people! It's November 1st and Halloween is officially over which means it's time to switch into holiday mode! It also means it's time to mark your calendars with all the super awesome handmade craft sales coming up!

For those of you who are avid attendees of This Ain't Your Grandma's Craft Sale for the past several years, you'll be happy to hear that there will be TWO sales this year! The first is a tag team with The Manitoba Craft Council and will take place on Friday November 26th at the West End Cultural Centre from 5pm to 10pm. Check out the details on the Facebook Event Page. And the second sale will take place at our usual stomping grounds, The Park Theatre on Sunday December 5th from 5pm to 10pm. There will be different people selling at each sale so if you can make both I highly recommend it. Sew Dandee will be at both shows in full force so, come say HI!

And I've been busy in the card making factory, too! I'm all over using vintage house wife images lately. Here's what I've come up with so far.

These cards come from the fact that I'm getting on in years and want to remind people that we can't stay pretty forever but we can stay lovable!

I recently acquired some fantastic vintage postcards from my Mom-in-law and they've inspired a new line of cards. I get great pleasure from seeing an innocent photograph of a loving couple and bringing out the rude, naughty thoughts that I imagine them REALLY thinking! Sick, I know but that's who I am. When it comes to making my cards, anyway.

The swap will take place at Sew Dandee on Wednesday October 20th from 6pm to 8pm. $15 gets you all the clothes your heart desires from the collection gathered for the swap. Plus there will be a sale on all the Sew Dandee Treasures Gently Worn Clothing just for the swappers. The last two swaps were a great success and this one is sure to be even better!

Spread the word and start ransacking your closet today! Items can be brought in to Sew Dandee Monday thru Friday between 10am and 6pm up until Tuesday October 19th.

My latest project: Crocheted Ear Muffs!

So, I've been experimenting with making some cool ear muffs for the chilly season that's fast approaching and here's what I've come up with so far!

I've been wearing my first pair under my bike helmet on my way to work in the morning and they're awesome for keeping the howling wind noise and cold out of my ears.

Keep in mind I can make you a custom pair too. I plan on making some with more appliques and button embelishments. And I hope to work on a pair of hamburger ear muffs at Where the Wool Things Are's knit night this Thursday! If you're a knitter or crocheter like me, come down to this great shop for good crafts, snacks and great conversation on Thursday nights from 5pm to 9pm in The Exchange.

Check out all the hooded scarves I've been making for the store! I've got TONS now but if you still don't see one you love, bring me a sweater and/or scarf and I'll custom make you one! Always an option at Sew Dandee!

And I've been getting distracted in between making the hooded scarves with ideas for reworked sweaters. Here's a couple I came up with!

And I've also been working on some new headband/neckwarmers! I'm in LOVE with this yarn! I apologize for the creepy picture but it gets the point across that it really is a two fer one kinda design.

We've got a new addition to our Sew Dandee local designer family as of today! Kathy Beck of Just A Little Longer makes the most adorable girls clothing using upcycled fabrics. Come see their cuteness in person, perfect for that little girl in your life!

I also wanted to spread the word that I've decided to carry gently worn footwear again for the time being. I just HAD to take in these fantastic BRAND NEW Uggs (not at a BRAND NEW price though) and gently worn Sugar boots in addition to some super cool Vans and Cons! Come check them out!

Well, Sew Dandee is now FULLY STOCKED in wintery wear and accessories! Come check out our great mitts, scarves, hats, leg warmers, arm warmers, hooded scarves, neck warmers and winter headbands and of course all the great coats and jackets!! I'm trying to find someone who makes cool ear muffs this year too so I'll be sure to keep you posted on any progess I make in my search.

And this past weekend marked the completion, installation and tear down of a project that is very dear to my heart: Knitting the Bridge! It was a HUGE success with almost enough knitting to cover the length of the bridge THREE times!! I had such a great time working on this project over that past several weeks and am so grateful to have met so many creative and awesome people. All of our work will be on display at the Manitoba Craft Museum at 183 Kennedy downtown for now but may be shipped off to another museum to be displayed. If you didn't get a chance to get down to the bridge to see our work, here's a shot that will give you an idea of it's awesomeness!

I JUST got in some new Melissa Abram hair pins, headbands and brand new sets of 4 buttons! I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner, getting her to make her adorable fabric covered items into sew-on buttons! So, now I've got sets of robots, cupcakes, kitties, mushrooms and more! Come down and check them out!

And on Friday local designer, Sarah Jonasson of The Velvet Vixen brought in some of her clothing. She uses new and recycled fabrics. Here's just a couple of her outfits!
